Lessing's novel shows two elderly people immersed in a series of "impossible love", Sarah and Stephen, Sarah love between an older woman and men who are twice his age, a taboo in many societies, Stephen love with a woman dead at least a century ago.
This drama unfolds in the context of a play, with the magic of a romantic story of Julie Vairon leads the troupe through strong passions that never materialize, but have their players in a state of constant desire and suffering by not having it.
So, Sarah, the protagonist of the story restates the need for physical closeness and sense of a man, now believed dead after 20 years of widowhood, and suffering that causes him not to. While Stephen will lead you down dark roads that ended their life.
